Open
Source, Linux, Unix…
what
does it all mean?
Published Online: December
2004
Imagine never paying
for computer software
again. Sound far-fetched? If
it were up to Richard
Stallman, Linus Torvalds
and a few others this
idea wouldn’t sound
so far-fetched to the
average Windows user. The
GNU and Linux operating
system projects have
popularized the idea
of open source, such
that Microsoft has made
key business strategy
decisions as a result
of the threat that it
poses.
This investigative Web
site strives to layout
the concepts of free
software, where it is
being used successfully
around the world and
why some software developers
like Microsoft and the
SCO Group want to stop
it.
