the output of a compiler, also called machine code

Free Software

As defined by the Free Software Foundation: software that is distributed with source code and permission for anyone to copy and distribute, with or without modifications, either gratis or for a fee.

GNU

GNU stands for Gnu's Not Unix.  It is a set of free operating system components developed by the Free Software Foundation and Richard Stallman.

GNU Public License or GPL

The terms under which all free software and open source software is released.  It requires that all source code be made available and that no proprietary modifications be made to it.

kernel

the central core software of an operating system that connects the computers hardware with its software

open source

proprietary software

Any software to which is not released as free software or open source under the GPL

source code

a set of human readable documents that instructs a computer's compiler as to how to create a program.

Unix™

A computer operating system developed in 1969 by AT&T Bell Laboratories.  It is currently owned by The SCO Group, Inc.
